Step 1: Connect the Scanner to Your Computer

Use a USB cable to connect your portable/document scanner to the Windows computer.

1. Plug the smaller end of the USB cable into the scanner’s USB port.

2. Connect the other end to a working USB port on your computer.

3. Ensure the scanner is powered on.

Step 2: Install Scanner Drivers (HP, Canon, etc.)

Install the recommended drivers for your scanner model:

• HP: Visit support.hp.com
• Canon: Visit usa.canon.com/support

Download and install the full driver package for better functionality.

Step 3: Use Windows Scan or Manufacturer Software

After installing drivers, you can use:

• Windows Scan App: Available via Microsoft Store.
• HP Smart / Canon IJ Scan Utility: Offers more control and scan options.

Step 4: Check Scanner Status in Device Manager

Ensure Windows detects your scanner:

1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.

2. Expand the Imaging Devices section.

3. If your scanner appears, it's connected properly. If not, update or reinstall the driver.

Step 5: Try a Different USB Port or Cable

If the scanner isn't recognized:

1. Try plugging it into a different USB port on your computer.

2. Use another USB cable if available to rule out cable faults.

Step 6: Enable Windows Scan Service

The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service must be running:

1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.

2. Locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

3. Right-click and select Start or Restart.

Step 7: Run Windows Troubleshooter

Windows can auto-detect scanner-related problems:

1. Go to Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.

2. Select your scanner and click Manage.

3. Click Run the troubleshooter.

Step 8: Use Compatibility Mode (If Needed)

If your scanner is older and drivers don't work properly:

1. Right-click on the setup file.

2. Select Properties → Compatibility.

3. Check Run this program in compatibility mode and select an older Windows version (e.g., Windows 7).

4. Apply changes and reinstall.
